Ash Wednesday was this past Wednesday, a day that commemorated Ash Ketchum, one of our generations most well-known and well-respected Pokemon trainers.
Okay, perhaps it does not necessarily mean that, and instead the first day of Lent celebrated in the Christian and Catholic faiths. But this Ash Wednesday, created by Daniel Kibblesmith at BuzzFeed, was specifically geared towards celebrating Ash Ketchum, a fictional anime character from Pokemon.
When the article appears on a list of other articles on BuzzFeed’s site, the title is simple and basic; “15 Reasons to Celebrate Ash Wednesday.” What will throw off readers is the thumbnail to the right. What does this image have to do with Ash Wednesday?
Those familiar with Pokemon will instantly get the reference. For others like the older generation may not. To the older crowd, Ash Wednesday is a day where people fast in commemorating the 40-day fasting of Jesus, Matthew, Mark and Luke, attend church and have an ashed crucifix marked on people’s foreheads.
Clicking on the story, a picture of Ash holding an earth badge welcomes readers. By that point, readers should get the notion that this article has nothing to do with the actual Ash Wednesday.
The entire article has pictures taken from the Pokemon television series and picture-sharing sites like Tumblr. There are 15 listed reasons of why readers should celebrate the humorously-created holiday. Some of the reasons can be synonymously used for its religious counterpart.
Reasons, such as the first and third reasons, among others, can be said of both Ash and Jesus. Kibblesmith manages to accomplish this alliteration of both.
Jesus was honest and lent a helping hand to those in need as he and his followers travelled Galilee spreading the word of God. Ash was the same, though not on the same scale as Jesus was, and he had no religious message to share, but he was honest for the most part and helped those he met along the way on his Pokemon quests.
Jesus was brave. There were times when Satan attempted to provoke Jesus and when he was sentenced to be crucified by Pontius Pilate, Jesus was brave and stood up to both Satan and his crucifixion sentence. Ash was brave when at times he was in confusing and, at times, near-death conundrums. Sure he may have whined and moaned, but he kept his cool in this despaired times.
There is nothing journalistic about this piece, and it was not to be taken as news, but as satire. These kinds of articles that BuzzFeed produce are not meant to be taken entirely serious, but rather as humor. It would capture young audiences’ attention more than it would an older audience, who are not the organization’s intended audience.
It’s all for poking fun at the day in a light-hearted manner.
